advancing ur timing is easy, its a tuning mod tho..and wont do alot, best to do if uve got some sort of exhuast, high flow intake and run on higher octane fuel.

The 5th gen sx has its factory timing set to +10 degrees.

Basically, turning the dizzy a little bit will make ur engine run a little faster(advance) or slower (retard).

All u need to advance ur timing is a timing light/gun - pretty cheap and a paper clip. I cant recall where the thread explaining this is. And i can't be bothered typing it. Can someone provide the link to the tech article or explain it. Maybe dunky... :laugh2:

okay well i may as well give this ago, sinister missed a few point but was right about the rest.

basically on factory timing your car will send a spark at approx 10Degrees Before top dead center. okay what this means is that it will send a spark at a certern point b4 it hits maximum compression, now whats the point of this i hear you say what the point of doin it b4 its compressed.

well this is meant to give your air fuel mix more time to exploded, if you advanced you timing then it gives your engine more time to explode and expand the fuel. this is were the use of higher octane fuels come in, a higher octane fuel basically makes more of an "explosion" i probably shouldn't use explosion its more of actual burn, altho fuel is fuel they basically refine the fuel further and what you get is a fuel that burns more completely, if that makes any sense.

but as sinsister did say this is a tuneing mod where you will get a little gain, as sin said too you will need a timing light for this you need to hook it up to the spark plug lead "1" believe it or not those lead will have numbers on them and believe its the one closest to the timing belt anyway. you will need to start the car for this but first you need to put a paperclip in the dynostic port connecting Te1 and e1 i believe its should actually be written on a sticker on the bonnet if not someone will know just do a search on yahoo as i know there is a full write up on this somewhere on the internet.

with the paper clip in and car started plus the timing light hooked up your read to start you will need to point the light at the crank pull and the light will hit a little "crack" on the pulley this will light up like a chrismas tree on every turn and using the marks on the timming belt cover and thats well tell you how many degress b4 top dead center it is. now to adjust this you need to loosen the bolts on the dizzy and lift it ever so slightly up or down and ti will adjust the timing advance or retart the timing.

please note any work done with this information is done at your own risk if you have any doubts about what you are doin please refer to the write up you can find with yahoo specific to celicas, or consult a mechanic.

Well Ive started to modify things in my car... or more personalise things..... Right now the only thing changed are the gearstick knob and pedals mmm shiny... ummm yeah, anyway main reason I did the gearstick knob was my car came with a nasty aftermarket one that stuck up so high I had to move my seat in to reach first gear.
Not fun when I normally drive with my seat all the way back!

Coming soon

Depending on how much money i have left after my leaking oil and power steering problems. *sigh*

Now where is that god damn camera cord *grumble*

Well its *hopefully* fixed now... so I can actually invest so worthwhile money into my car... and/or other things YAY

Cost me $80 to have it washed inspected and a few hoses tightened cos they were leaking... all going well thats all it will take.

And when i say it was leaking before I left it for like a week and the entire resevoir thing was empty... that was bad, very bad

tell me c3, does having no roof cause chassis stiffness to go out the window,, just wondering how one of the convertables handles without all that extra a/b pilla stiffness ?

with a sway bar stock in the front (dunno if normal 5th gens get them) and the 4 wheel steering it handels fine.
i didnt find any noticable diffrence from a coupe to a convertible in handeling.
but in saying that im sure they looked at this when they produced the car and modified the convertible to handle at an acceptable level

yeh the normal 5th gen comes with front sway bar, eh just wondering, as i know alot of convertable models suffer in chassis stiffness compared to their roofed brethren..lol

Does the convertable have a 5sfe in it ?

lol sin that funny there is no real lost it would be stiffer then yours as your hatch actually means it doesn't have a connection from strut to strut like the coupe and the convertiables that were based on the coupe chasis. i would say thats why you didn't notice a handling difference i dare i say that hte 4ws probably helped with the added weight
