As yet I do not own a Celica, but want to.

I want a project car to enjoy and display. Currently trying to decide between a 1982 RA60 and a 1987 SX162, both are manual and supposedly running. My dilemma is one is rwd and carburettor, the other fwd and EFI. I suspect the older one will appreciate a little more than the other and be easier to work on.

But most important is drivability.

Can anyone advise which is the better to drive and which is likely to give the least head aches.
Any advice very appreciated.

I have owned both and I liked the 162 more, as it was more fun to drive, even if fwd.

My RA60 was an imported GT-Rally model. It was difficult to find parts back then, might be more difficult now. But then again, parts for the 162 are starting to get rare too.

I've sort of owned both. I say sort of because my 3rd gen was a TA63 GT-TR.

The 162 i had was a white lightning, it went and handled well for what it was, and I picked it up cheap too. However the TA63 if you don't know is the import factory 3t-gte turbocharged, rwd, LSD, 5speed version of RA60, so naturally I liked that one better.

I'd go the ra60, or even better a RA65. They are just good cars. Also do you like rwd or fwd?

My bets on the st162, one of the best cars i've ever owned. They have an awesome seating position, its not too hard to find a decent example (5-6 years newer depending on which one you get) and the 3sge motor is a lot of fun especially

For a daily with lowish power i've always found FWD forgiving, I don't personally track any of my cars and generally don't like to draw too much attention. Even when comparing my SW20 MR2 (rwd mid engine) to the st162 (even with a 3sgte in it) I never found the need for rwd. I stay happy with fwd lol I'd prefer the more stylish interior and seating position of the st162
