I just bought an st204r, it's 20 years old. Now it does have a few minor problems like a small oil leak and stiff shocks, but apart from that it's fine. Or is it? Since I've only had this car for 1 month of its 20 years that it's been alive, I don't really know how good it is on the inside, engine wise. If I wanted everything to be checked out would I just go to a mechanic and tell them to raise the vehicle, have a look underneath it, and have a good look at the engine & replace anything that looks old or needs replacing? I think this would be considered a "major service" One thing I think would be important to mention is that this car had been sitting around for about 1 year before I bought it, and most parts are still the original ones.

You might want to think about getting the water pump, gaskets and fluids changed. The mechanics will find other things that need changing as well.

5sfe's are pretty reliable and can even be driven with blown headgaskets for quite some time before dying (phiz ;P)

if the car has been sitting I would definitely change fluids with an oil flush

Thanks for the suggestions, the oil & brake fluid has been flushed & changed already, I'll do all the rest eventually.

I am not sure that replacing things just because they 'look old' is the best way to go. Most of the car looks old....
