Hi all, I've always loved the look of the ra28 fastback and I've finally found one that will soon be mine. It's just a roller though because the person I'm getting it off was going to put a v8 in it so I'll have to chase down an engine and box, any tips on where to get hold of them? There doesn't seem to be too much on ebay or gumtree but then maybe I'm just looking for the wrong thing lol

You can put quite a few engines in that chassis - I don't know much however but i'm sure someone here will be able to help!

Welcome to the forums buddy! :)

I've got a few ideas for different engines down the track depending on budget but was thinking of putting the standard 18r setup in to start with. Seems like the easiest way of getting it going without having to worry about engineers certificates etc. A 3sge or f20c would be nice though haha

Yeah true. Or you could chuck a 2zz-ge in it... That would actually be AWESOME.

The R-engine would be a good choice because of the parts availability....think "how many Hilux's are there in Australia?"

Acquire an 18R-G if you want period specific (better high-end performance compared to other 18R's and the correct motor for an RA28), but it would be nice to see a 3rd gen 3S-GTE in there! :D

However it's much more work comparatively...and money! $$$$

You would still need engineer approval because of the difference in engine number to VIN no?

You might want to have a look at Andy's thread....it will give you much inspiration!

I do like the idea of going to an 18r-g instead of the 18r-c i think it was we got over here. It would need an engineers cert but it would be an easy one seeing as they came with that engine elsewhere in the world. Could always try for someone who doesn't know the difference at vicroads haha

But which transmission? Late model MR2 wouldn't work because the transmission is transversely mounted.
I guess you could always acquire a lotus exige transmission! along with an inter cooler and centrifugal supercharger!

Seems like a bit of custom work there with prop/ tail shafts, engine mounts, wiring, gauge clusters etc....
On the bright side you can save weight by removing the air-con compressor and power steering pump!
That does seem like a pretty cool swap though!

R154 or W58 with a custom bell housing unless by some miricale there is some toyota one that'll work.
Yep bit of custom work, most of it isn't too difficult.

Yeah either mad NA ITB screamer or some sort of forced induction, more than likely turbo.

We can dream.

Lotus still uses a transverse setup like an MR2...

It would seem people on here have bigger ideas than my bank account might allow haha, I could always just make everyone mad and put a rotor in it...

I am humbled sir! You are totally right. oops!

It would probably be more practical to stick with OEM motor and trans setup. I still like the idea of sticking a 22R-TE in there though! Plus it would be very doable with little to no custom work.

The clubman guys have done it but they have much greater room to experiment with gearboxes etc (usually Escort/Sierra gear since the kits are usually British)
